The qualities of the mountain are within the earth. High mountains are worn down by the relentless elements, so the valleys become silted up. The law of nature thus fills up what is empty and empties what is too full.
The spiritually superior person can achieve goals without boasting of merit. The person occupying a high position who soldiers on in moderation personifies the wisdom of poise in this world.
In human affairs it is the law of fate to undermine those who possess too much and to bring help to those of modest means. Thus modesty and moderation bring success.
